British 'bad boy' of tennis Dan Evans gets back on track in Vancouver

Dan Evans has been steadily climbing the ATP rankings in his comeback after serving a year suspension for cocaine use.

The British player ranked 41st in March 2017 started his comeback in May with a series of Challenger appearances in Glasgow and Loughborough before showing what he can do more seriously during the grass court season. Evo, as he is affectionately known to many tennis fans reached the ATP Surbiton semi-finals in June before going one better in Nottingham by reaching the final losing only to Alex De Minaur, collecting lots of valuable ATP ranking points.

Wimbledon did not go to plan and Dan played a poor match against Matthias Bachinger in the 2nd round of qualifying at Roehampton signalling more work was needed to progress further back up the rankings after his time out from the sport.

Evans took a few weeks off before the hard court season approached and with still a low ranking would have to continue to play Challenger level tennis for the time being. Early losses in Binghampton, Lexington and Aptos signalled troubling times for Evans... but last week in his fourth hard court Challenger in a row things changed for the better!

The Birmingham tennis star won a tight final qualifier against USA's Tommy Paul in Canada and having reached the main draw he never looked back. Solid wins against Escobedo, Fabbiano, Ivashka and Pospisil allowed Evans to make his 2nd Challenger final of the year in Vancouver.  Yesterday Evans faced his biggest battle of the week so far, a match with Jason Kubler who himself had been finally climbing the ATP rankings after showing glimpses of his former junior success. The Aussie went a set up and so nearly won the match in straight sets before Evans managed to break near the end of the 2nd set to force a decider. The 3rd set was equally tough for both players but it was Evans who came through 7-3 in the tie-breaker to lift his first Challenger title since 2016.

Its a huge step for the 28 year old on his way to trying to compete at the top level once again. He climbs 84 places to ATP 226th and will now be able to enter both Challenger Circuit main draws without having to qualify and also be high enough ranked to make the Qualifying draws of many ATP events where the prize money and ranking points are bigger.

Yes Evo has had his troubles in the past and will probably continue to do so, but the British bad boy of tennis is on the right track again and looks to be putting in the work needed to progress back towards the ATP top 100. He still has plenty of years left so lets hope he stays out of trouble, plays his best tennis and the success will be achieved.

13th August ATP Rankings Update: Tsitsipas, Del Potro, Kokkinakis

Its Monday again and you know what that means! The ATP rankings are out!

The obvious big mover of the week is ATP Toronto Masters finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The Greek player who turned 20 years old yesterday breaks into the ATP top 20 for the first time this week zooming up 12 places to ATP 15th. Only a few months ago Stefanos was ranked outside of the top 50 and really has built his confidence with his run at Wimbledon and now in Canada. Can he finish 2018 inside the top 10?

Juan Martin Del Potro moves up to ATP 3rd for the first time in his career as Alexander Zverev failed to defend all of his Toronto 2017 points. Delpo is one of the most popular players on the tour and is now only approx 1000 points from Roger Federer in 2nd place! Let the battle commence

22 year old Russian Karen Khachanov reached the semi finals in Toronto giving Rafa Nadal a big fight. He is rewarded by moving up to ATP 27th a new career high. Top 20 will be his next target.

Another Russian Daniil Medvedev is also rising back up the rankings to 56th and having just qualified for the Cincinnati Masters this weekend this rise looks set to be boosted further.

Further down the ATP rankings we have a new PB ranking for Belarus player Ilya Ivashka up 25 places to 100th after a good performance in Toronto. He is inexperienced at this level but his confidence will surely be boosted with wins over Sugita and Harrison last week before giving Kevin Anderson a good fight.

Another notable rise this week go to South African Lloyd Harris who continues his form on the ATP Challenger circuit and enters the ATP top 150 for the first time at 146th

Stan Wawrinka rises 44 places back up to ATP 151st and looks to be building his level of play again after struggles with injuries. Wont be long until he is back top 20.

Thanasi Kokkinakis wins the ATP Aptos Challenger and returns to the ATP top 200 up 69 places to 199th. Another Aussie Alex Popyrin wins the Jinan Challenger and the 19 year old powers up 99 places to ATP 211th.

James Ward who has been having success in Asian Challengers reached the final in Jinan and rises back up 53 places to ATP 252nd

Cincinnati Masters this week so expect more big ranking movements next week!

ATP Masters Tournaments: Losing their Status?

I know you can only beat the opponents you come up against in the draw, same goes for a Grand Slam....

This is going to be a bit controversial.... but with Andy Murray being out of action for sometime, Roger Federer picking and choosing his tournaments and Novak Djokovic being hit and miss (except for Wimbledon) ...... I ask the following question.

Are the Masters Series events recently losing their status a little?

Or is this just simply players taking their opportunities and the transition period for a new breed of tennis stars?

It seems the opportunity to reach the latter stages of Masters Series events has never been easier?

Harsh? Will anyone winning big events after the retirements of Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray be ultimately judged like this?

Stefanos Tsitsipas the new ATP tennis star

I first mentioned a formidable young Greek tennis player back in 2015. His name was Stefanos Tsitsipas and a few months later in  2016 he became the ITF world junior number 1, showing his already huge potential. That same year Stefanos reached 2 Grand Slam QFs and 2 SFs in the junior Slams losing only to Shapovalov x 2, De Minaur and Auger-Aliasime all of who are set to have big careers in tennis themselves.

Tsitsipas slowly started playing ATP Challengers and gaining experience finishing 2016 just outside the ATP top 200. Stefanos started playing more regularly in 2017 away from the juniors and later in the year broke into the ATP top 100, reaching the ATP Antwerp semi finals by defeating David Goffin in the QFs, a huge victory for him.

The boy from Athens has had a brilliant 2018, especially since the clay court season started. He has pushed on with ease up the ATP rankings. Tsitsipas big breakthrough was at the Barcelona ATP 500 event where he caused a shock upset against Dominic Thiem before losing the final 2-6 1-6 to clay court king Rafa Nadal.  People were suddenly taking a lot more notice of the 19 year old.

Stefanos won his first Grand Slam match at the French Open in May before losing in 4 sets to Thiem who himself went on to reach the Roland Garros final. Tsitsipas big Grand Slam breakthrough happened only a few weeks later when he reached the 4th round of Wimbledon with some big battle fighting displays before going on to lose to eventual semi finalist John Isner only by tie breaks.

A semi final spot last week at ATP Washington meant the Greek players ranking zoomed into the ATP top 30. This week he has again played brilliantly to knock Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic out of the Toronto Masters 63 67 63, winning a phenomenal 84% of first serves. His ranking is now provisionally up to ATP 23rd and a quarter final win on Friday would push him into the top 20 in Mondays rankings for the first time in his career.

The Greek player turns 20 on the 12th of August the day of the Toronto Masters final..... can he give himself the biggest birthday present? The crowds love him, the media loves him so far and social media adores him. Stefanos often chats with fans, sharing pictures of his success and also sharing quotes/words of wisdom about his tennis career and performances in a very reflective way. You cannot help but read his tweets and believe in every word!

Watch this space, it's going to be filled with Stefanos Tsitsipas success I am sure.

Night!

Shuai Peng: Tennis Integrity Unit ban and fine for coercion

I am very disappointed in Shuai Peng!

Obviously I do not know the whole story but to try to 'pay off' another player at a Grand Slam event so that she can play with a higher quality doubles partner is both in bad taste and also very un-sportsman like of her and her team, you just don't do it Grand Slam event or not!. The coach should also have known better and was to be fair probably the one doing the behind the scenes coercion between the players.

The Chinese player as you all know has been a favourite of mine for many years and has been a brilliant player in both singles and also doubles where she has been ranked WTA number 1 and won Wimbledon and French Open doubles titles with Su Wei Hsieh.

Overall it’s only a small stain on Peng's career. Stupid, naive and DISRESPECTFUL in my eyes. Although some players will ultimately have lost some respect for the Chinese player, she will be back in November after her ban and still playing quality tennis for many years to come.
