ATP Masters Tournaments: Losing their Status?

I know you can only beat the opponents you come up against in the draw, same goes for a Grand Slam....

This is going to be a bit controversial.... but with Andy Murray being out of action for sometime, Roger Federer picking and choosing his tournaments and Novak Djokovic being hit and miss (except for Wimbledon) ...... I ask the following question.

Are the Masters Series events recently losing their status a little?

Or is this just simply players taking their opportunities and the transition period for a new breed of tennis stars?

It seems the opportunity to reach the latter stages of Masters Series events has never been easier?

Harsh? Will anyone winning big events after the retirements of Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray be ultimately judged like this?
